Jacqueline (Jackie) Bastiaans, RD, LD was in a car accident at age 15 which completely severed her spine. She uses a manual wheelchair for mobility but has full use of her upper body. Jackie received her BS in Dietetics from Fontbonne University and completed a dietetic internship at the VA Medical Center in St. Louis Missouri. She has worked at the St. Louis VA Health Care System since 2002 in various capacities since her internship, first in the mental health unit for one year, then in outpatient nutrition counseling for five years, and now as the Spinal Cord Injury Dietitian for 14 years which includes adaptive cooking groups. She has presented for several webinars funded by Academy Diversity mini grants to the Research DPG in April 2020 and to the NEHP DPG in September 2021. Jackies success as a practicing dietitian with a disability is highlighted in the Clinical Nutrition Management DPG Newsletter, Spring 2021 Special Edition and in Todays Dietitian June/July 2021 and August/September 2021. Jackie has served the profession as president of the St. Louis Dietetic Association. In 2010, she was selected for the Missouri Dietetic Associations Emerging Dietetic Leader Award. From 2013-2019, Jackie has served on the board of Paraquad, a nonprofit with a mission to empower people with disablites to increase their independence through choice and opportunity. Jackie has been a leader for the national Veteran Affairs SCI/D Dietitian work group from 2020-2022 and current workgroup member.
